FOREWORD
2019 marked an important milestone for DGFT Tanzania. It was the year full of success in
implementing development projects.
In
2019, our budget advocacy work scored some important goals. In our sexual and
reproductive health information and services project, we supported 10 schools and community
around the schools with important education concerning genders issues, relationship and
reproductive health. We see great achievement in this project since we managed to lower the
number of schools pregnancy and cases of gender based violence.
DGFT innovative programming has once again shown that investing in knowledge building and
information sharing on small business introduction for women groups is the surest pathway to
the empowerment of women. Today, through our support women are real engaging in small
business which enables them to generate income to run their families.
Also supporting local subsistence farmers and schools by planting avocado trees on their farms
in close collaboration with them in order to provide them with additional nutrition, a new
source of income and environment conservation, DGFT sign contracts with them that commit
them to maintaining the trees and we have seen very positive results so far. The main barrier
here is the cost of the avocado seedlings and training workshops. The water intensiveness of
growing avocados is not an issue in this area due to the abundance of water in this
mountainous region.
Conducting regular tree planting events e.g. on Earth Day (combined with education and a
large-scale environmental cleanup). DGFT works with a number of local institutions in order to
achieve this: firstly DGFT have meetings with local community leaders who advise on which
native /exotic trees are most suitable to be planted in the particular area. Secondly, DGFT
receive help from Tengeru Horticulture. And finally the local Forestry College and local primary
and secondary schools get involved in the planting as the Foundation is strongly focused on
environmental education as well.
As we present our work in 2020, we reaffirm our commitment to working with community, our
partners and donors to empower the community to be healthy and enable them to utilize the
environment without threatening it.

1.0 ABOUT DULUTI GREEN FOUNDATION TRUST
Duluti Green Foundation Trust (DGFT) is a nonprofit and nongovernmental organization that
carries out its functions and duties in Arumeru district since 2005 and legally registered by the
government in 2008. DGFT has rooted its activities in empowering the local community and
environmental conservation mainly through planting trees, protection of water catchment
areas and raising awareness on environmental conservation to the community.
Duluti Green Foundation Trust (DGFT) is a result of the endlessly effort of Ms. Gladness Obed
Pallangyo whose vision has always be, seeing environments conserved and local community
make use of it to improve its well-being. DGFT runs Environment Conservation Program
through Village Environmental Conservation Initiative (VECI).
For more than 15 years, DGFT has tree planting program through which it has managed to plant
thousands of trees of different species in various areas of Arumeru District. DGFT targeted
areas are both public and private land, with this regard more than 90,000 tree have been
planted in public areas including water catchment areas, hills, mount Meru, hospitals and
schools compound while also more than 10,000 has been planted in private land. DGFT mostly
engaged in planting indigenous trees and sometimes exotic trees.
Duluti Green Foundation Trust, with funding support from the Germany embassy in Tanzania
implemented a 6-month (June 1st - December 31st, 2019) Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH)
and GBV prevention project in Arumeru district, more than 5000 community members were
reached with the education and services.
Works of the DGFT mostly have been funded by part of money obtained from Tengeru Cultural
Tourism Enterprise in which tourists interact with local people, learn about culture and make
their contributions to help the community improve their living condition. Money obtained from
this Enterprise is not enough to sustain the vision of the DGFT Director Mama Gladness
Pallangyo who is looking forward to support the local community more. Actually, economic
independence through environmental conservation for Tanzanian people is at the heart of
DGFT’s vision and programmes. Through DGFT’s current programmes, significant attempts have
been made to remove some of the obstacles that may prevent communities from taping
potential opportunities to invest, accumulating assets and fulfilling their aspirations.

2.0 ACHIEVEMENTS
Duluti Green Foundation Trust has a great achievement as for the year 2019 in a number of community
development projects, the following are performance and achievement as for the year 2019;
2.1 SRH PROJECT
DGFT, with funding support from the Embassy of the Federal Germany in Tanzania
implemented a 6-month (June - December 2019) project titled “Reaching out school adolescent
in Arumeru district with Sexual and Reproductive Health information and services”. The main
focus of the project was to contribute in reduction of adolescent’s pregnancies, unplanned
pregnancies through providing reproductive Health education and services to enhance the
welfare of Marginalized girls and women. The project baseline data recorded that there were
40 pregnancy case confirmed in the ten schools supported with this project in the time of June
2017 to June 2019 but from the beginning of this project up to the evaluation time there were
no pregnancy case recorded which indicates a positive impact of our project. This project was
implemented within the broader goals of DGFT work in Tanzania which are aimed at ensuring
that poverty is alleviated and community is able to utilize the available resources and
opportunities without destructing the environment. Below are photos taken during training
workshops:

2.2 AVOCADO PRODUCTION IN SCHOOLS AND HOME GARDENS PROJECT
DGFT throughout 2019 has been supporting local subsistence farmers and schools by planting
avocado trees on their farms in close collaboration with them in order to provide them with
additional nutrition, a new source of income and environment conservation. DGFT sign
contracts with them that commit them to maintaining the trees and we have seen very positive
results so far. The main barrier here is the cost of the avocado seedlings and training
workshops. The water intensiveness of growing avocados is not an issue in this area due to the
abundance of water in this mountainous region. We had great achievement in this project
regarding that 4 schools, 1 college and 20 households has been supported this year while
7
number of surviving avocado trees being 250 of which in a very few coming years we will have
avocado fruits. Below are the photos taken during the tree planting;

2.3 ENVIRONMENT CONSERVATION PROGARAME
This has been done through regular tree planting events e.g. on Earth Day (combined with
education and a large-scale environmental cleanup); DGFT works with a number of local
institutions in order to achieve this: firstly DGFT have meetings with local community leaders
who advise on which native /exotic trees are most suitable to be planted in the particular area.
Secondly, DGFT receive help from Tengeru Horticulture. And finally the local Forestry College
and local primary and secondary schools get involved in the planting as the Foundation is
strongly focused on environmental education as well. For the year 2019 we have planted more
than 5000 trees in different areas like 3000 trees being planted at Abia Hill and other 2000
being planted in different water sources areas.
Also we have re-established our tree nursery and hired 1 tree nursery caretaker by 2019 in
which for the coming years we will have enough trees to feed our community and area which
require trees the most in Arumeru district. Our tree nursery is located near to the Patandi
special needs teachers college. Below are the photos taken during the tree planting;

2.4 ORPHANAGE SUPPORT PROGRAM
DGFT has been very ambitious in supporting children and orphans in Arumeru district to ensure
that their getting basic needs and quality education. Our priority as for 2019 was the Ikunda
Orphanage Center where we have supported them in many ways including learning materials,
modern kitchen, solar power energy, transports cost and other center running expenses. We
are very happy for the work done at Ikunda orphanage center together with our volunteers and
tourists who visited our organization through Tengeru Cultural Tourism Programme. Almost
80% of the Ikunda Orphanage center needs were met through DGFT at the year of 2019 to
2020. The below are photos taken at Ikunda orphanage center;
DGFT Director and Project Manager Handover School books support, Freezer and modern
kitchen to be used at the Ikunda orphanage.

2.5 SCHOOL SUPPORT PROGRAM
DGFT has supported schools in different ways in 2019. First DGFT has reached more than 5000
students in 10 schools with Sexual and reproductive health education where our target was to
reduce early pregnancies and gender based violence both in schools and community in general.
Also 4 schools were support with avocado production project and here our organization has
supported these schools with 200 tree seedlings where in two schools the project has
performed very well compared to the other schools. Third, our organization has supplied
learning materials such books, pens, pencils, maker pens, teaching maps and atlas to Mavinuni
primary schools.

4. CHALLENGES
Though DGFT is working hand in hand with Volunteers from overseas to reach our goals but the
organization face various challenges, some of the challenges are as follow;
1. Lack of community commitment in the programs. The demand is very high among the community
members but when they get supported they careless about the support i.e some households were
supplied with avocado tree seedling but they fail to take care of the trees.
2. Financial problem is another crucial challenge, the organization sometimes fails to conduct training
workshops, conducting research, sometimes fails to complete evaluation studies to our projects and
bad enough failing to startup new development projects.
3.
Lack of organization car, the organization activities is mostly setup on remote areas of which roads
in those areas are tough. this is a huge challenge to our organization since sometimes we fail deliver
services as it is required and sometimes totally unable to reach the communities really in need.
5. CONCLUSION
While it has been a tough years of operations, DGFT has noted a lot of success, most being
declared by the community members themselves. The achievement was made through the
support of the government of the United Republic of Tanzania, and peoples (tourists and
volunteers) from America, Europe, and Asia. Special thanks to the Embassy of the Federal
Germany in Tanzania due their great support to our SRH project.
We are still thriving to support our community and Tanzania country to continuing being the
better place for everyone to live. By doing so we are encouraging more partners, friends, and
volunteers to join our development initiatives to help us reach our goals of alleviating poverty
among our community.

6. RECOMMENDATION
The evaluation suggests the following recommendations based on the findings of the
assessment.
Duluti Green Foundation Trust is encouraged to investigate, through research and process
monitoring, the reasons why there was a community commitment in programs, despite the
knowledge and support gained.
Participation of youths, especially females in decision-making in all aspects affecting their
lives (at household, village, wards, district, region and national level) must be encouraged.
This can be the tool in fighting the GBV.
The SRH project was noted to be highly effective in raising awareness and increasing
knowledge on SRH, GBV, HIV and AIDS issues among adolescents and community in general.
It should be replicated in other areas with some adjustments, which should include
adopting cost effective ways of delivering the same products at a lesser cost, and widens its
reach. The participants recommended to reach out other groups such as police and judges
since their mostly involved in child pregnancy and GBV cases were a lot of cases loses the
evidence in the court. Also there are areas in Arumeru including those of Maasai community
that the situation is very worse and it real needs such a support.
To ensure continuation of training in the supported areas, there is need to put in place a
very strong system that enables trained young people and other community groups to
effectively transfer similar skills to their peers and community in general, like putting in
place regular follow up among the trained groups.
The organization has to strength its sources of income so as to make the organization goal
achievable.
